Read to your child

by: Alexis

23 October 2009

If you have children, perhaps one of the finest gifts you can give them is the love of reading. This is something that they will be able to keep with them and use for the rest of their lives. It will educate, entertain and provide a continuous source of pleasure.

However, it cannot be denied that the pursuit of reading has given way to television viewing, video games and the Internet. Nevertheless, there are so many other forms of reading apart from books and this is evident from the mass of information available online, all requiring to be sorted and read at some stage!

The love of reading needs to be cultivated at an early stage in life so if you have children, do read to your child from babyhood. It doesn’t matter whether they understand the words you use – it’s like talking – this is how a child’s language is developed, by hearing it spoken, and in the case of reading, matching the sounds while pointing to the written word or the pictures in the book.

Have a variety of books around the house and enjoy that special time when you read to them, perhaps at bedtime or at any time when you feel like snuggling up. That way, reading and stories will be regarded as a pleasure throughout your child’s lifetime, whatever new technology has in store for them!
